Education standards for STAT clinicians increase
STAT EMS began a cognitive Computer Adaptive Test or (CAT) process February 2010, for its entire clinical staff. STAT’s Training Department said it dramatically increases the standards in Genesee County. The process allows its staff to test their cognitive skills off site from a computer, based on monthly topics assigned by the Training Department. If the clinician fails the test, remediation is conducted between STAT’s Educator and the clinician to validate their cognitive learning.
Recently, the Genesee County Medical Control Authority adopted a new Education standard for all EMS clinicians serving the County requiring annual practical skills. While the Med Control process was adopted STAT was already conducting annual practical skill training with its EMS Education Department. Currently the State of Michigan requires Continued Education Credits and training for EMS personnel to achieve Relicensure every three years.
"We feel it is a necessary step to increase the education of our staff. EMS is an ever changing world of new knowledge and new ideas and with the CAT we feel this will promote greater cognitive learning to facilitate the practical skills of our people”, says Gary Denman, Paramedic and EMS Educator and Training Coordinator for STAT.
